New Zealand’s Climate-related Disclosures (CRD) regime requires certain large organisations to publicly report on climate-related risks and opportunities, following recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The mandatory reporting applies to large companies, listed issuers, banks, non-bank deposit takers, licensed insurers, and investment managers, requiring them to disclose their governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics around climate change impacts on their business.
CRD reporting focuses on both the risks climate change poses to the organisation (physical and transition risks) and the organisation’s impact on climate change, with the first mandatory disclosures beginning for the 2023 financial year and reported in 2024.
Australia’s ASRS applies to large entities including listed companies, large proprietary companies with consolidated revenue exceeding $500 million, and certain registered schemes such as managed investment schemes that meet specified size criteria. These requirements capture most significant Australian businesses and investment vehicles.
The standards align with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) framework and require covered entities to disclose how climate-related risks and opportunities affect their business strategy, financial performance, and operations. This includes reporting on governance structures for climate oversight, strategic responses to both physical risks (such as extreme weather events) and transition risks (including regulatory changes and market shifts), risk management processes, and relevant metrics and targets.
Mandatory reporting under ASRS begins for annual reporting periods commencing on or after 1 January 2025, meaning many Australian organisations are currently implementing systems and processes to meet these disclosure requirements. The regime positions Australia alongside other jurisdictions implementing similar climate disclosure frameworks, providing investors and stakeholders with standardised, decision-useful information about climate-related business impacts.
